Library is the vital system of Higher Education for contributing of knowledge, skill and ideas to build up the future career of the end-user community. It is the life blood of knowledge and understanding, widening the mental ability and intellectual growth and development of learners. Today, college libraries are regarded as a student – centered, learning programmes, where education could be imparted without the class room lecture a knowledge based library system is authenticated for the advancement of college education of today and tomorrow. The Mission of the library is to provide the relevant sources of information to end users relating to the instructional programmes to achieve its end results.

About the library

Majuli College library started in a small room of the college in the year 1962 and moved to its present premises in 1998.since then it has grown in size and contest to take the present shape. With the developments in computers, communication technologies, the behavioral characteristics of the information seekers have been changing rapidly and the library is trying to its best to adapt with the technological advancement. The library of the college has an extensive and varied collection of books. This collection is augmented on a regular basis. To facilitates a congenial atmosphere for reading.

The library is well equipped with modern facilities and resources (print and electronics). The library is providing various services to its users. It has been catering to the needs of fifteen hundred students of under graduates, research scholar, Distance Education and KKHOU students, Faculty, college staff members. The library has also facilities the outsiders specially the neighboring locality of the college. To cater the rising demands of information the Library subscribe journals, periodicals, magazines and regional and national newspapers and covering latest information resources. The collection of books, back volumes of periodicals, CD ROM, DVD ROM databases a rich collection of CDs is also available in the library. The library has a special collection of books on Majuli. The Majuli College Library is renamed as “SHIKSHA RATNA ATUL CHANDRA GOSWAMI LIBRARY” in the year 2012. The founder principal of Majuli College.

The AC Goswami Library is fully automated using RFID technology with the help of SOUL 2.0 software developed by the INFLIBNET center Ahmadabad. It is the first library in Upper Assam and one of the few libraries in Assam fully automated using RFID technology enabling self–issue and return facility and single anti-theft gate security system. The library is also equipped with 10 CCTV cameras surveillance systems in Library. The Library provided a separate conference room for conducting meetings & instructional discussions, a Separate teacher study room, and a digital library facility with the latest computers for the users. for the last five decades, the library has been lifeline of the academic activities of the college

Pradip Chandra Das joined as Librarian in Majuli College on Monday 11 January, 2010. He has done his M.A. and MLISc. from Gauhati University, Assam. He attended a number of national and international seminars and conferences and published quite a number of papers.

LIBRARY RULES & REGULATION

1.0 Opening Hours: The Library will remain open from 9.30 AM to 4.00 PM on all working days. These hours may be curtailed or extended in special circumstances by prior notice on the notice board

2.0     Membership:

2.1 The Membership of Library is open to all the Students, teachers, regular employees and other employees of the college.

2.2 On special request, outsiders are also admitted for a short period to use the Library for reference purpose with the written permission of the Librarian

2.3 To become a member, a person has to fill up a Library membership from and submit it at circulation Counter.

2.4 A student will not be entitled to get his/her admit card to any Examination unless he/she obtain a “LIBRARY CLEARENCE CERTIFICATE” from the Librarian.

3.0  Categories of Membership and Their Privileges:

3.1   The category of membership, number of books to which entitled, period of Loan and caution deposit shall be as follow:-

4.0 Borrowing Books:

4.1     A books will be issued to the borrower against production of RFID Smart Card                                                      

4.2   All Reference books loose and bound volumes of periodicals including Magazines are not for issue.

4.3     The Librarian reserves the right to recall any book from any member at any time.

4.4     The loan period may be shortened by the librarian if the books are special demand.

4.5      An overdue charge of Rs.1.00 Rupees per day per volume will be collected for late return of the books borrowed by them.                                         

 4.6       The librarian reserves the right to waive overdue charge at his/ her discretion under special circumstance.

4.7       The Librarian reserves the right to allow more books on special request, if any.

5.0     Loss of Laminated Borrower Card and Books:

5.1    The members are responsible for the library RFID Smart Card issued to them. Lose of library RFID borrower card should be reported to the librarian immediately. Duplicate library borrower card will be issued on payment of Rs. 200/.

5.2    Members shall be responsible for any loss which library may suffer through the loss or misuse of their borrower card. 

5.3      In case of loss of books by the borrower he/she shall either replace the book(s) or remit the cost.

5.4     If the books of a multi volume set is damaged or lost, the member concerned shall be liable to replace the whole set or pay the cost of the entire set on the above line.

6.0 General Rules:

6.1    Library borrower RFID Smart Card is not transferable.

6.2    Members shall observe silence in the reading halls.

6.3   Members shall not engage in conversation in any part of the library.

6.4   Members shall not write upon, damage or mark any books belonging to the Librarian.

6.5   Members shall not bring their personal belongings and library books issued to them inside the library.

6.6   Members are responsible for any damage caused by them to the books or any other library property and shall be required to pay the penalty imposed by the librarian.

6.7 The members caught tearing pages/stealing of books will be suspended forthwith from using the library facilities and further disciplinary action will be initiated against them by the college.

6.8 The members should carefully examine the books issued to them before leaving the library counter. They shall bring immediately to the notice of the librarian.

6.9 Any misuse of the Library Reader’s Card may lead to the cancellation of privilege enjoyed by the member.

 

7.0 Other Rules:

7.1   When the students have any complaint about the library service they should not enter into any argument with the library staff, but bring it to the notice of the librarian in writing.

7.2   The users of the library may suggest to the librarian any book or journal or any other reading material for being required.

7.3   The library rules may be amended or altered as and when necessary.

8.0 Library Services:

8.1 Bibliographical search from the library database on request.

8.2 Xerox facility is available in the library at the rate of Rs. 1.00 per copy for student & Rs 2.00 per copy for others. This facility is exclusively for academic purpose only. 

8.3 Book Bank facility is available.

8.4 News Paper Service.

8.5 Internet Service.

8.6 Current Awareness Service. 

8.7 Ready Reference Service.

8.8 E-books & E-journal facilities.

8.9 Reading Room Service.

9.0 Library Awarded:

To cultivate the Reading Habit among the student community of Majuli College, the Library authority introduces “The Best Reader Award” which is distributed annually.

Procurement of the Books

Separate requisition forms for general and textbooks are available in the download menu. One may also access these forms from the www.majulicollege.org/library website. Faculty members who wish to recommend new books may please fill up and forward these requisition forms with the signatures to the Librarian for further processing. Students may also recommend for textbooks by filling up the requisition forms by the faculty, and forward these to the Section. The Section attends to phone and email queries from the users. Apart from these, a register is kept in the Section to get feedback and for making general enquirers.

E-resources: N-LIST

AC Goswami Library has been connected with “National Library and Information Services Infrastructure for Scholarly Content (N-LIST)”, a project of INFLIBNET, which provides ‘access to e-resources to students, researchers and faculty from colleges and other beneficiary institutions through server(s) installed at the INFLIBNET Centre. The authorized users from colleges can now access e-resources and download articles required by them directly from the publisher’s website once they are duly authenticated as authorized users through servers deployed at the INFLIBNET Centre.’

A dynamic Online Public Access Catalogue serves users as a union catalogue of AC Goswami Library. A search is available through author, title, subject, publisher, ISBN and Boolean logic queries. Users can reserve books and check the transaction history using their login Ids.
