About

Established on September 17, 1962, with the sacred mission of illuminating the river island with the beacon of education, Majuli College is the premier institution of higher education situated at Kamalabari in Majuli, the only island district of Assam. The need to establish the college at Kamalabari arose from the geographical isolation and educational backwardness of the world’s most populous river island. Connecting it to the mainstream of the country was a challenge in the early sixties. A group of conscious educationists and public activists realized that this could only be achieved through the pursuit of higher learning.
A public meeting was held at Majuli Milan Sangha, Kamalabari, in March 1962, with the sole objective of discussing the founding of a college to impart higher education to the people of Majuli. The meeting formed a steering committee with members from all communities to take the task forward. Late Keshabram Borah was appointed President, and Late Krishna Kanta Goswami was made Secretary of the steering committee. Despite devastating floods posing a tremendous threat to their historic endeavor, these two illustrious sons of Majuli, along with a few dedicated individuals, toured every nook and corner on foot, mobilized public opinion, and collected donations for the proposed college. Thus, the dream of opening a college was fulfilled.
It is worth remembering another distinguished son of Majuli, Atul Chandra Goswami, who was serving as a History lecturer at North Lakhimpur College at the time. He kindly agreed to serve the newly established college as its honorary Principal, a role he held until 1995.
We strive to make our students valuable members of society with great regard for human values. Our goal is to make students self-reliant by cultivating a scientific outlook, free from all prejudices and superstitions. The tremendous success of our Silver Jubilee Celebrations in 1988 and Golden Jubilee Celebrations in 2013 reflects the glorious tradition of this institution. Graduates of Majuli College are serving in government offices, schools, colleges, universities, and various private establishments with dedication, sincerity, and innovative thinking, all of which have been nurtured by this institution.

Affiliated with Dibrugarh University, Majuli College offers undergraduate education in both Arts and Science streams. While the Arts stream has been functional since its inception, the Science stream began in 1978 and came under the Deficit Grants-in-Aid system in 1986. Currently, the college has 10 departments in the Arts stream and 5 in the Science stream. The college offers both Higher Secondary and Degree courses to around 1,000 students annually. It also offers postgraduate courses through Distance Learning Mode under Dibrugarh University and U.G. and P.G. courses in various subjects under Krishna Kanta Handiqui State Open University (KKHSOU). In addition, the college offers vocational courses in Tourism, Journalism, Computer Applications and Social Work for the benefit of its students.
With the support and cooperation of a dynamic group of forward-thinking professionals, the college is committed to leaving its indelible imprint on the sands of time.
